Inception Workshop on Economic Analysis for Gender and Development

Asiatic Research Institute at Korea University and Asian Development Bank held an inception workshop on “Economic Analysis for Gender and Development” at the Asiatic Research Institute in 31 March-1 April, 2014. For the workshop, all of the participants (Korea Team, Harvard Team and ADB) were invited.

Economic Analysis for Gender and Development TA has two major scopes: 1) To quantify the economic cost to society due to gender equality by using both micro- and macro level analysis and 2) To discuss the issues related to the gender and economic development across countries and compare these regions in order to figure out commonalities and differences.

The inception workshop aimed to share the ideas of upcoming workshop and to discuss methodology and key issues for the research. During the workshop, there were two major sessions: 1) Presentation by Korea University team on a proposed methodology for quantifying gender inequality and 2) Country presentations and discussion for China, India, Indonesia, Pakistan and Korea.

The first session introduced a model of gender inequality and economic growth with its tentative results of calibration, analysis of policies and general applications. The second session discussed the methodology on the country analysis or gender economics. The common topic for the country studies is female labor market precipitation and each country study analyzes the issues related to this common topic.
