The East Asian Community Forum (EACF) aims to create a network of distinguished scholars of East Asia and bridge academia and policymaking circles. Its goal is to analyze current key political and economic issues in the region, exchange views on the ways to enhance intra-regional cooperation and overcome common challenges, and build a web of close scholarly collaboration that can generate intriguing academic work with policy implications.
The first EACF in 2011 will focus on the following theme: the rise of China. The rise of China has been widely discussed by scholars of and policy makers in the region as an essential factor that could alter the security or economic dynamics of East Asia. How do countries in the region and China herself perceive China’s rise in military and economic power? How would and should each country in the region adjust her economic and security strategies given the rise of China? How would the rise of China affect dynamics between the key actors in the region and the prospects for economic and security community building?
The first two sessions of the Forum will discuss the security and economic implications of “China’s rise” from the perspectives of China herself and two other key actors in the region, i.e. South Korea and Japan. The final session will introduce other important actors such as the U.S., North Korea, and Taiwan into the picture and examine the prospects for security and economic cooperation and community building in the region in the context of China’s rise.
