Cross-Currents: Movement, Migration and Mobility in East Asia

2011 KU-Berkeley Forum

Call for Papers

The second biannual Forum co-sponsored by the Institute of East Asian Studies at UC Berkeley (IEAS) and the Research Institute for Korean Studies at Korea University (RIKS) will take place June 22-24, 2011 on the UC-Berkeley campus. The Forum will provide East Asia scholars with the opportunity to explore the potential breadth and depth of “cross-currents” as a metaphor for the multi-directional flow of people, goods, and ideas across time and space in East Asia. In keeping with the mission of Cross-Currents: East Asian History and Culture Review*, the new IEAS-RIKS online and print journal that will be launched at the 2011 AAS meetings, the 2nd Forum welcomes scholarly contributions from all disciplines in cultural and historical studies. Possible topics to be explored include, but are not limited to, those concerning movement across boundaries; the dynamics of encounters; the formation of patterns, networks or communities; and systems of communication and trade.

Please email paper title with an abstract of 250-300 words to crosscurrents@berkeley.edu by March 1, 2011. Be sure to include your name, title, and institutional affiliation. A limited number of travel grants will be available for participants.

* Cross-Currents: East Asian History and Culture Review offers its readers up-to-date research findings, emerging trends, and cutting-edge perspectives concerning East Asian history and culture from scholars in both English-speaking and Asian language-speaking academic communities. A joint enterprise of the Research Institute of Korean Studies at Korea University and the Institute of East Asian Studies at the University of California at Berkeley, Cross-Currents seeks to balance issues traditionally addressed by Western humanities and social science journals with issues of immediate concern to scholars in China, Japan, Korea and Vietnam. This English-language journal includes scholarship on material from the 16th century to the present day that has significant implications for current models of understanding East Asian history and culture. Embedded in a web-based platform with functions for collaboration, discussion, and an innovative editing and publishing process, the e-journal uses new technologies to facilitate a dialogue among East Asia scholars around the world that is enhanced by audio-visual and multilingual capabilities, as well as web access to original contributions submitted in East Asian languages. The semi-annual print issues of Cross-Currents feature articles, reviews, and essays that have been selected from its peer-reviewed, quarterly online counterpart for their scholarly excellence and relevance to the journal’s mission.
