The Asiatic Research Institute (ARI) will host the second East Asian Community Forum (EACF) on “Historical Reflections on Korea-China-Japan Relations and a New Cooperative Order in East Asia.” Co-organized by the Northeast Asian History Foundation and the Korea Research Center, University of Tokyo, the Forum will be held on May 25-26, 2012, in Seoul, Korea.
The EACF, which launched last year, aims to develop a network of distinguished scholars of East Asia and bridge academia and policymaking circles in the region. Our goal is to analyze current key political and economic issues in East Asia, exchange views on the ways to enhance the prospects for intra-regional cooperation and community building, and build a web of close scholarly collaboration that will contribute to policymaking in the countries of the region.
The year 2012 marks the 20th anniversary of the establishment of Korea-China diplomatic relations and the 40th anniversary of normalization of China-Japan diplomatic ties. This year is also monumental in many ways: South Korea, the United States and China undergoing the transfer of government, North Korea setting it as a target year for the establishment of the Strong and Prosperous Nation and Japan mulling on strategic choices in the wake of the March 11 earthquake.
In this context, the second EACF will shed light on the year of political transformation from historical, theoretical and empirical perspectives, review the multi-faceted regional dynamics in Northeast Asia and envisage a new regional cooperative order. For stimulating discussion, we will invite policymakers and diplomats to the forum as well. We also plan to compile the papers and publish them as a book.
